Water Main Replacement Project Update
The Village of Otego understands that residents have had questions and concerns regarding the ongoing water main replacement project. We recognize that construction activities, temporary water interruptions, and changes to daily routines can be frustrating, and we appreciate the patience residents have shown throughout this process. To help keep residents informed, we would like to provide an overview of the process and explain what to expect as work continues.
Step 1: Installing the New Water Main
When construction reaches your street, crews begin by installing the new water main approximately 5.5 feet below the roadway. After the new pipe is installed, it is temporarily covered so crews can move on to the testing and approval process. During this stage, the work area may appear rough or unfinished. This is normal. Portions of the newly installed line may need to be accessed again if adjustments or repairs are required during testing. For this reason, final cleanup is not completed until later. Restoration will take place after the new main has been fully tested, approved, and placed into service.
Step 2: Testing and Approval
After installation, the new main is flushed, pressure tested, chlorinated, and sampled according to Department of Health requirements. Water samples are tested by an independent laboratory and reviewed by the Department of Health before the line can be placed into service.
Step 3: Connecting Homes
Once approval is received, crews connect homes to the new water main and install new curb stops. Some residents may notice temporary cloudiness or discoloration in their water after the connection is made. This is normal and usually clears after running the water for a short time. In some cases, faucet aerators may need to be rinsed if debris becomes trapped.
Step 4: Retiring the Old Main
After all connections are completed, the old water main will be disconnected and permanently removed from service.
Step 5: Restoration
Once the water work is complete, crews will repair affected roadways and sidewalks and restore driveways and lawns as needed. Restoration of areas impacted by construction is included as part of the project, and homeowners will not be expected to repair these areas themselves.
Thank You
We understand that projects of this size can create temporary inconveniences, but they are an important investment in the reliability and long-term future of Otego's water system. We sincerely appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation of our residents throughout this process.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Streets and Water Department, the Village Office, or any member of the Village Board. We are happy to provide information and help residents stay informed as the project progresses.
